How we met
Mike and I met at a BBS get-together at Shakespeare's -
either in November or December of 1992.
What we do together
toy with computers, watch Star Trek, play games
Funny story
Mike is the man of a thousand voices, a thousand sound
effects, and impeccable timing. If somebody makes a funny comment with a funny
voice that makes everyone laugh, then it was Mike. He even adds his own sound
effects to games - if he deems the sound effects unworthy. And he's good at
it! Most impressive are the TWO cats "meow"ing at the same
time. The funniest was an imposing of the voice of Barney (the purple
dinosaur) during a Deep Space Nine episode.
Why Mike and I are friends
Mike goes by the name of "Thraxarious (often shortened as
"Thraxus") Hai Draco - Member of TDIN and the Gold Dragon
League" on BBSes. And that typifies his attitude toward a lot of things -
a curious stare, a cautious look, and a dignified manner that says more in
action than it does in words. Mike is the kind of person who cares about
people, although not to the point of interference. Mike doesn't tell people
what to do or how to do it, but he'll certainly listen and care and be
supportive.
Mike was also my roommate from July 1997 until September 1999,
when he decided to head for California for a return to college in pursuit of
his career. As roommates go, he's great. He didn't mind noise (he made a lot
of it), and he didn't dictate the way things were done, but he was an eager
and willing co-worker when something needed to be done.
The constant name of Thraxus Hai Draco on the BBSes made Mike very widely
noticed, but when I met him, most people called him "Thrax" in real
life. I've always called him "Mike," and most of our real life
friends call him "Mike" now, too. |
